Antique Japanese Satsuma Butterfly Belt Buckle, c.1900

Meiji to early Taishō, circa 1890–1920

$195AUD

A charming antique Japanese Satsuma belt buckle, beautifully decorated with two colourful butterflies against a softly crackled cream-coloured ground, framed by a deep cobalt blue border enriched with delicate gilt detailing.

Dating stylistically to the late Meiji or early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920, this attractive accessory reflects the growing international appreciation for Japanese decorative arts around the turn of the 20th century.

The gently domed ceramic panel features two butterflies with finely detailed wings in soft shades of pink, green, ochre and gold. Delicate gilded lines accentuate the wing patterns, creating an elegant contrast against the pale cream background.

The shaped cobalt blue border is embellished with small gold floral and scrolling motifs, while the metal mounting follows the contours of the ceramic panel.

The reverse retains its original-style belt fittings, comprising a long retaining bar and a smaller central hook, together with a small impressed mark.

Historical Context

During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Japanese decorative arts became increasingly popular in Europe and other international markets. Satsuma ceramics were particularly admired for their delicately crackled glazes, intricate enamel painting and rich gilded decoration.

Alongside traditional vases and ornamental objects, Japanese workshops produced decorative accessories such as belt buckles, brooches and buttons, adapting their ceramic artistry to changing Western fashions.

Butterflies were a popular decorative subject in Japanese art, often associated with beauty, transformation and the fleeting nature of life.

A Charming Antique Accessory

Combining delicate Japanese ceramic decoration with the elegance of Edwardian-era fashion, this butterfly belt buckle is an appealing example of antique wearable art.

Whether preserved as part of a collection of Japanese Satsuma ceramics, displayed among antique fashion accessories or incorporated into a carefully chosen vintage ensemble, it offers a lovely glimpse into the decorative tastes of the early 20th century.
