Antique Japanese Satsuma Miniature Vase Signed Ryuzan, Gilt Figural

Ryuzan · Probably Meiji / early 20th century

$425AUD

A finely decorated antique Japanese Satsuma miniature vase, bearing the gilt signature of Ryuzan (龍山筆) and featuring beautifully detailed figural scenes, traditional Japanese motifs and rich gold decoration.

Standing just 9 cm tall, this elegant cylindrical vase is a lovely example of the intricate artistry associated with Japanese Satsuma ceramics of the Meiji era. Its slender form is decorated with two detailed figural compositions depicting traditionally dressed Japanese figures in outdoor settings, surrounded by trees, flowing landscapes and delicate ornamental detailing.

The figures wear elaborately patterned robes, highlighted with fine gilt work that creates depth and texture across the surface. Their expressive faces and richly detailed garments are complemented by soft shades of blue, green, russet and cream.

Decorative floral panels and geometric borders frame the scenes, while a circular Shimazu-style crest appears around the lower body. The vase stands on three small integral feet and is finished with a finely crackled cream-coloured glaze, characteristic of Satsuma-style ceramics.

Despite its miniature proportions, the piece displays considerable decorative detail and craftsmanship.

The base and feet also show signs of age and handling.

Overall, the vase presents beautifully, with its intricate figural decoration and much of its original gilding remaining clearly visible.

Historical Context

Satsuma ceramics became internationally celebrated during the Meiji period (1868–1912), when Japanese decorative arts attracted considerable interest from European and international collectors.

Particularly admired were the richly gilded and intricately painted pieces featuring historical figures, traditional costumes, landscapes and elaborate decorative patterns.

The name Ryuzan appears on documented examples of Meiji-period Satsuma ceramics, including miniature vases held in Australian museum collections. The gilt inscription on this piece reads Ryuzan hitsu, meaning "painted by Ryuzan". While the inscription is consistent with a recognised Satsuma signature, the individual artist's attribution has not been independently authenticated.

The circular crest decorating the lower body resembles the Shimazu family crest (mon), traditionally associated with the Satsuma region.

A Distinctive Japanese Collectable

With its richly detailed figural decoration, elegant miniature proportions and signed base, this antique Japanese vase would make an attractive addition to a collection of Satsuma pottery, Meiji-period ceramics or traditional Japanese decorative arts.

A charming piece for display in a cabinet, on a shelf or alongside other carefully collected Japanese antiques.
