Koshida · Early 20th century

$175AUD

A charming antique Japanese Satsuma cup and saucer, signed with the Koshida mark 越田 to the base. The set is finely decorated with a Kyoto-style landscape scene featuring a cottage, trees, water and distant hills, enhanced with gilt detailing and a traditional crackle glaze.

Historical and Collector Context

Koshida 越田 is a recognised mark found on Japanese Satsuma and Kyoto-style export wares, often written in gilt on a red or dark cartouche. Recorded examples are associated with late Meiji to Taishō period Satsuma-style ceramics, with later production also known.

Satsuma ware became highly popular in the export market during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, admired for its fine crackle glaze, detailed hand-painted decoration and extensive use of gilding. Landscape scenes such as this were especially appealing to Western buyers, offering an idealised vision of Japanese rural life, with cottages, water, mountains and trees rendered in soft enamel colours.

This Koshida-marked cup and saucer is a lovely example for collectors of Japanese Satsuma ware, Kyoto-style ceramics and early 20th-century Japanese export porcelain and pottery.

A decorative and collectable Japanese Satsuma cup and saucer, ideal for cabinet display or as part of a curated Asian ceramics collection.
