Antique Japanese Satsuma Floral Belt Buckle, Cobalt Blue, c.1900

A beautifully decorative antique Japanese Satsuma-style belt buckle, featuring a rich cobalt blue ground adorned with finely painted floral decoration in gilt and enamel.

Probably dating to the late Meiji or early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920, this elegant buckle reflects the popularity of Japanese decorative arts at the turn of the 20th century. Its gently domed, scalloped form is richly ornamented with chrysanthemum-like blooms and trailing foliage, highlighted in soft shades of pale blue, white and gold against the deep blue background.

The floral decoration is particularly attractive, combining delicate enamel work with warm gilt accents. The dark cobalt ground creates a striking contrast, while the metal mounting follows the softly shaped contours of the ceramic panel.

The reverse retains a long retaining bar and central hook, characteristic of traditional belt buckle fittings.

Historical Context

During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Japanese Satsuma ceramics became internationally admired for their intricate enamel painting, richly gilded surfaces and elaborate decorative designs.

In addition to traditional vases and ornamental ceramics, Japanese workshops produced smaller decorative accessories, including belt buckles, brooches and buttons, adapting their artistic traditions to Western fashions.

Floral motifs, particularly chrysanthemums, have a long history in Japanese decorative arts and are associated with longevity, beauty and the changing seasons.

A Charming Antique Accessory

With its elegant cobalt blue ground, richly detailed floral decoration and distinctive antique character, this Japanese Satsuma-style belt buckle would make a lovely addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics, antique fashion accessories or Meiji-period decorative arts.

A charming example of Japanese-inspired wearable art from around the turn of the 20th century.
