Antique Japanese Satsuma Chrysanthemum Belt Buckle, c.1900

An attractive antique Japanese Satsuma-style ceramic belt buckle, featuring delicately painted chrysanthemums in rich shades of coral red, purple and soft blue, highlighted with fine gilt detailing.

Probably dating to the late Meiji or early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920, this charming accessory reflects the popularity of Japanese decorative ceramics in Western fashion around the turn of the 20th century.

The gently domed, shield-shaped ceramic panel is decorated with an arrangement of chrysanthemum blooms and buds among dark green foliage. Fine gold lines define the petals and leaves, creating an elegant contrast against the softly crackled cream-coloured glaze.

A coral-red border follows the distinctive outline of the ceramic panel, complemented by a narrow gilt edge and shaped metal mounting.

The reverse retains a long retaining bar and central hook, together with a small stamped symbol on the metal backing. The mark has not been conclusively identified.

The combination of colourful floral decoration, delicate gilding and unusual shield-shaped form gives this antique buckle considerable decorative appeal.

The metal backing shows patina, scratches and age-related discolouration.

The colourful chrysanthemum decoration remains attractive and clearly defined despite the restoration.

Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up image showing the repaired area, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Historical Context

During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Japanese Satsuma ceramics gained international recognition for their delicate enamel painting, finely crackled glazes and elaborate gold decoration.

Japanese workshops produced a wide variety of decorative objects for overseas markets, including small fashion accessories such as belt buckles, brooches and buttons.

These accessories reflected the growing influence of Japanese design on Western fashion during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The chrysanthemum, or kiku, is an important traditional motif in Japanese decorative arts, commonly associated with longevity, refinement and the autumn season.

A Charming Antique Collectable

With its colourful chrysanthemum decoration, distinctive shield-shaped design and appealing period character, this Japanese Satsuma belt buckle is an interesting example of antique decorative craftsmanship.

Despite its previous repair, the piece retains considerable visual charm and would make an attractive addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics, antique belt buckles or historical fashion accessories.
