Large Antique Japanese Satsuma Vase, Bijin Panels, Meiji-Taishō, 38cm

A large and highly decorative antique Japanese Satsuma vase, dating to the late Meiji to Taishō period, circa 1900–1920. The vase has a substantial baluster form and is richly decorated with finely painted figural and floral reserves, set against an ornate red and gilt brocade-style ground.

The main panels show elegant bijin figures in traditional dress among flowering branches, chrysanthemums, maple leaves and garden details. The surrounding borders are lavishly finished with gilt scrollwork, fan motifs, geometric bands and fine line decoration, creating the dense, jewel-like surface associated with Japanese export Satsuma of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Condition:
Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks or repairs noted. There is fine all-over crazing typical of Satsuma-type ware, light age-related rubbing to the gilding and minor marks to the base rim consistent with age and handling.

Historical and Collector Context:
Satsuma ware became one of Japan’s most recognisable export ceramics during the Meiji period, admired for its cream-coloured crackle glaze, rich overglaze enamels and generous use of gilt. During the 19th century, Satsuma nishikide developed into a highly decorative export style, often featuring flowers, birds, landscapes, literary scenes and figures in traditional dress.

This vase belongs to that decorative export tradition: large in scale, richly gilt, visually complex and highly decorative. The apocryphal Chenghua-style mark on the base should be understood as a decorative East Asian ceramic mark rather than a Ming dynasty date; the form, glaze, decoration and subject matter are consistent with Japanese Satsuma-style export ware.
