Vintage Japanese Moriage Porcelain Geisha Plate, Satsuma Style, c.1930s
Circa 1930s
A charming vintage Japanese porcelain plate, dating to the early Shōwa period, circa 1930s. The oval dish is decorated in a Satsuma-style manner with three kimono-clad figures in a garden setting, framed by flowers, a bridge, architectural details and a distant mountain landscape.
The design combines fine red linework, soft enamel colours, raised moriage detail and gilded accents. The deep cobalt-blue border with gilt scroll decoration gives the piece a rich decorative finish, while the central scene has the delicate, atmospheric quality associated with Japanese export porcelain of the early 20th century.

Historical & Collector Context:
This style of Japanese porcelain was produced for the export market during the early 20th century, when Western buyers had a strong interest in decorative Japanese scenes, kimono figures, garden landscapes and richly gilt surfaces. Although often described as “Satsuma style”, pieces such as this are usually porcelain rather than traditional Satsuma earthenware, borrowing the visual language of Satsuma decoration through fine figural scenes, gilding and raised moriage work.
The scene reflects the romanticised Japanese imagery that appealed to collectors in the Taishō and early Shōwa period: elegant figures, flowering gardens, bridges, lanterns and distant landscapes. The use of raised moriage and gilt detail gives the plate depth and texture, making it especially attractive as a cabinet or wall display piece.
A decorative and colourful vintage Japanese plate, ideal for collectors of Satsuma-style porcelain, geisha scenes and early 20th-century Japanese export ware.
