Vintage Japanese Satsuma-Style Porcelain Vase with Geisha Garden Scene, Showa Period

Japan · 1930s–1950s

$135AUD

A decorative vintage Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain vase dating to the Showa period, likely circa 1930s–1950s. Standing 25 cm tall, this elegant Japanese export vase features a richly detailed garden scene with geisha figures, a lakeside pavilion, willow trees, lotus blossoms and distant mountain scenery.

The porcelain body is decorated with raised moriage-style enamel and gilt accents, creating an ornate textured surface with strong visual depth. Finely painted kimono patterns in red, blue and green add colour to the figural scenes, while burgundy floral panels, dot-textured backgrounds and stylised flower medallions provide a decorative frame. The gently flared petal-shaped rim completes the balanced form.

The base is unmarked, which is not unusual for Japanese Satsuma-style export porcelain produced during the early to mid-20th century. Although unsigned by a specific artist or studio, the vase has strong decorative appeal and displays beautifully as an example of Showa period Japanese porcelain.

Fine surface crazing is also visible in places, consistent with the age and character of the piece. These details are shown in the photographs and have been reflected in the description.

Japanese Satsuma-style export porcelain became popular with Western collectors during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Showa period examples often feature colourful figural scenes, intricate floral panels, raised enamel decoration and extensive gilding. This vase is an attractive decorative example, with a generous size and finely detailed composition.

This vintage Japanese porcelain vase would suit collectors of Satsuma-style ceramics, Japanese export porcelain, Showa period decorative ware and hand-painted Asian antiques.
