Vintage Japanese Satsuma-Style Porcelain Vase with Geisha Boat Scene, Showa Period

Japan · c.1930s–1950s

$135AUD

A decorative vintage Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain vase dating to the Showa period, likely circa 1930s–1950s. This tall hand-painted vase features a detailed continuous scene of geisha and attendants travelling by boat through a mountainous landscape, surrounded by willow trees, stylised waves and richly decorated floral panels.

The porcelain body is embellished with raised moriage-style enamel work and gilt detailing, creating a textured surface with strong visual depth. Burgundy floral panels, patterned medallions and dot-textured backgrounds frame the central figural scenes, while the gently flared rim and balanced form give the vase an elegant display presence.

The base is marked “SATSUMA” in red, a Japanese export mark commonly found on decorative Satsuma-style porcelain made for Western markets during the early to mid-20th century. The vase is unsigned by a specific artist or studio.

These signs of age are visible in the photographs and are consistent with the vase’s vintage character.

Japanese Satsuma-style export porcelain became popular with Western collectors during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pieces from the Showa period often feature elaborate figural scenes, raised enamel decoration, extensive gilding and richly patterned borders. This vase is a strong decorative example, with an attractive scale and detailed hand-painted design.

This vintage Japanese porcelain vase would suit collectors of Satsuma-style ceramics, Japanese export porcelain, Showa period decorative ware and hand-painted Asian antiques.
