Japanese Satsuma-Style Porcelain Plate Signed Ikko, Bijin and Phoenix Scene

Ikko · Early 20th century

$145AUD

A finely decorated Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain plate, signed in gilt with the characters 一光, read as Ikko. Dating to the early 20th century, the plate features an elegant riverfront landscape with a procession of bijin figures dressed in traditional kimono, accompanied by delicately rendered architecture, trees and softly painted scenery.

The wide border is particularly striking, with richly gilded phoenix motifs extending around the rim. Raised gilt enamel detailing and finely painted patterns create a layered decorative effect, while the compact 13 cm diameter makes the plate especially suitable for display in a cabinet or on a small stand.

Historical and Collector Context

Satsuma-style ceramics became highly popular with international buyers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Decorative export pieces were often enriched with detailed figure scenes, architectural landscapes and raised gilt decoration intended to reward close inspection.

This plate bears the gilt signature 一光, read as Ikko. Signed works associated with the name Ikko are known within the wider Satsuma tradition, although the precise workshop attribution of this example has not been confirmed. Its appeal lies in the finely rendered bijin scene, the elaborate phoenix border and the carefully applied gilt details, all presented in an attractive small cabinet-display format.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
