Vintage Japanese Maruni Geisha Porcelain Plates, Set of 3

Maruni · c.1920s–1930s

$75AUD

A charming set of three vintage Japanese porcelain plates marked Maruni 丸二, likely dating to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1920s–1930s.

Each plate is decorated by hand with an individual scenic composition featuring figures in traditional Japanese dress, gently layered landscapes, bridges, pine trees and distant mountains. Soft blue, grey, ochre and pink tones create an atmospheric effect, while fine gilt rims and subtle moriage-style raised details add texture and warmth.

The three graduated sizes display beautifully together and allow each painted scene to be appreciated individually. Their delicate decoration and pre-war Japanese character make the set an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese export porcelain or a distinctive decorative grouping for a cabinet, shelf or wall display.

Historical and Collector Context

The 丸二 mark is associated with Maruni, a Japanese merchant connected with decorative export ceramics during the early 20th century. Rather than representing a single kiln, the Maruni name appears on wares likely produced by different workshops under contract, allowing for a varied range of styles and decorative techniques.

During the Taisho and early Showa periods, Japanese export porcelain continued to draw inspiration from traditional landscape painting while adapting its decoration for international collectors. Figures in traditional dress, pine trees, bridges and distant mountains became particularly appealing motifs, evoking an idealised view of Japan through finely decorated tableware and display pieces.

This graduated set is especially attractive for its three individual scenic compositions, delicate gilt accents and clearly visible Maruni mark. It would make a charming addition to a Japanese porcelain collection or an elegant decorative display.
