Vintage Japanese Kutani China Hand-Painted Landscape Plate and Saucer Set with Water Wheel, c.1950s

Mid-20th century

$65AUD

A charming vintage Japanese porcelain plate and saucer set, marked KUTANI CHINA and likely dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1950s.

The two matching pieces are hand-painted with a peaceful rural Japanese landscape featuring a traditional water wheel, thatched cottage, pine trees, a riverbank and distant mountains. Fine black linework is softened by washes of pale blue, grey and muted ochre, while delicate gilt edging provides a subtle decorative finish.

The restrained colour palette gives the set a calm and atmospheric character. Displayed together, the plate and saucer create a balanced decorative composition suitable for a cabinet, wall arrangement or curated collection of vintage Japanese ceramics.

The reverse carries a red KUTANI CHINA backstamp. This is best understood as a Japanese export porcelain mark rather than an individual artist signature.

Historical and Collector Context

During the mid-20th century, Japanese workshops produced a wide range of decorative porcelain for the export market. Landscape scenes featuring mountains, water, pine trees and traditional rural buildings were especially popular, combining recognisable Japanese imagery with softer colour palettes suited to Western interiors.

This matched plate and saucer set is a decorative example of Japanese export porcelain marked Kutani China. Its detailed water-wheel scene and understated colours make it an appealing addition to a collection of vintage Japanese ceramics.
