Vintage Japanese Kutani Porcelain Bowl with Figural Board Game Scene, c.1950s–1970s

circa 1950s–1970s

$135AUD

A decorative vintage Japanese Kutani porcelain bowl, dating to the mid-to-late Showa period, likely circa 1950s–1970s. The interior is richly hand-painted with a figural scene of three men gathered around a traditional board-game table, likely depicting a game of Go.

The composition is rendered in a softly balanced palette of iron red, pale green, blue, black and gilt accents. Raised white and black enamel dots form delicate floral details along the inner border, while patterned panels and scrolling motifs add further visual interest. The exterior is decorated with black scrollwork and red roundels, creating an attractive contrast with the more detailed interior scene.

The underside bears a red hand-painted 九谷 mark, read as Kutani. This identifies the ware tradition rather than a specific artist or workshop.

Historical and Collector Context

Kutani porcelain originated in the Kaga region of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture and developed into one of Japan’s recognised decorative ceramic traditions. Kutani wares are particularly known for their colourful overglaze decoration, bold compositions and use of traditional figural, landscape and floral motifs.

This vintage bowl is especially appealing for its unusual board-game scene, varied enamel decoration and balanced combination of interior and exterior ornament. Its practical 14.5 cm diameter makes it suitable for cabinet display, presentation on a stand or inclusion within a collection of Japanese decorative porcelain.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
