Pair of Vintage Japanese Satsuma-Style Moriage Vases Signed Seizan 清山, c.1920s–1930s
Seizan (清山) · Early 20th century
A decorative pair of vintage Japanese Satsuma-style ceramic vases dating to the early twentieth century, likely the late Taisho to early Showa period. Each vase features a richly detailed figural scene with seated monks or scholars set against a stylised mountainous landscape, framed by gilt outlines, geometric borders and raised moriage accents.
The warm brown ground is complemented by soft blue, green, red and gold tones, while the textured enamel details add depth and visual interest. Both vases bear a red Seizan 清山 mark together with a MADE IN JAPAN export marking on the base.
Retained as a matching pair and measuring approximately 18 cm in height, these vases have a strong decorative presence without requiring a large display space. They would make an attractive addition to a curated collection of early Japanese export ceramics or a distinctive symmetrical accent for a mantel, cabinet or sideboard.

Historical and Collector Context
Japanese Satsuma-style export ceramics remained popular during the early twentieth century, particularly during the late Taisho and early Showa periods. Decorative vases of this type often combined figural scenes, mountainous landscapes, gilt detailing and raised moriage accents to create an ornate visual effect suited to international tastes.
The MADE IN JAPAN export marking and red Seizan 清山 mark help place this pair within that decorative export tradition. Their appeal lies in the survival of two matching vases, the layered enamel decoration and their balanced presentation as a pair.
