Pair of Antique Nippon Porcelain Vases with Coastal Sunset Scene, c.1900–1917
Unidentified Nippon-era workshop · circa 1900–1917
A striking pair of antique Japanese Nippon porcelain vases, dating to the early 20th century, likely circa 1900–1917. Each vase is finely hand-painted with a tranquil coastal sunset scene featuring traditional sailboats, flying seabirds and softly reflected evening light across calm waters.
The tall double-handled forms are enhanced with geometric gilt borders extending vertically along the bodies, together with further gold detailing around the rims, bases and handles. A softly graduated palette of pale blue, cream, warm orange and red gives the pair an atmospheric quality, while the matching composition creates an elegant and cohesive display.
The undersides bear green Cherry or Plum Blossom Hand Painted Nippon backstamps, associated with Japanese export porcelain produced during the Nippon era.

Historical and Collector Context
Nippon porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics marked with the word Nippon, a name for Japan commonly used on wares exported during the period from 1891 to 1921. These early export pieces were often decorated by hand for Western markets and are appreciated today for their varied forms, atmospheric landscapes and decorative gilt detailing.
The green Cherry or Plum Blossom Hand Painted Nippon backstamp found on this pair is a recognised Nippon-era mark and should not be confused with the Maple Leaf mark associated with Morimura Brothers. The matched presentation, generous 24 cm height and detailed coastal sunset scenes give the vases particular decorative appeal as an early 20th-century Japanese export pair.
All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
