Historical and Collector Context

Japanese Satsuma-style ceramics were widely produced for the export market during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Crackle glazes, cobalt accents, gilt decoration and figural scenes were popular features of these decorative wares. Small cups and saucers of this type are particularly attractive as display pieces and offer an accessible example of early Japanese export ceramics.
