Pair of Antique Japanese Satsuma Plates, Hododa Mark, Meiji Period
Hododa · 1890s–1910s
A finely decorated pair of antique Japanese Satsuma earthenware plates, likely dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period. Each small plate is hand-painted with an abundant floral composition of chrysanthemums, peonies and delicate foliage, with small birds among the branches. The decoration is enriched with detailed gilt work and framed by a geometric border in warm brown and gold tones.
Both plates bear the Hododa mark in gilt on a dark red rectangular ground, beneath the Shimazu crest. Hododa is associated with the production and trade of Japanese Satsuma ware, with marked pieces known in a variety of decorative styles. The finely crackled ivory-toned glaze and detailed gilding give this pair an attractive antique character.

Collector Context
Hododa-marked Satsuma ware is associated with Japanese export ceramics from the Meiji period. Hododa appears to have operated as both a merchant and manufacturer, with pieces produced or decorated by more than one workshop. These plates are appealing examples of the detailed floral decoration and extensive gilding associated with late 19th and early 20th-century Japanese Satsuma ware.
