Miniature Japanese Satsuma-Style Moriage Porcelain Vase with Figures, Marked JAPAN, c.1920s–1930s
c.1920s–1930s
A charming miniature Japanese Satsuma-style moriage vase dating to the interwar period, likely circa 1920s–1930s. Despite its petite scale, the vase is richly decorated with a colourful hand-painted figural scene, raised moriage detailing and delicate gilt highlights.
The front depicts two robed figures against a soft blue background, while the reverse is decorated with a stylised landscape of distant mountains and gold-accented clouds. Additional floral moriage decoration appears around the shoulder, complemented by deep brown tones at the neck and base.

Historical and Collector Context
The red “JAPAN” mark to the base is characteristic of Japanese export wares produced for overseas markets during the interwar period. Decorative porcelain of this type was created in a variety of workshops and often combined colourful hand-painted scenes with raised moriage embellishment inspired by Satsuma-style decoration.
With its compact size and detailed surface decoration, this vase would make an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese export porcelain, miniature ceramics or vintage moriage ware.
