Miniature Japanese Kutani-Style Porcelain Vase with Geisha, c.1930s
Japan · circa 1930s
A charming miniature Japanese Kutani-style porcelain vase, likely dating to the early Showa period, circa 1930s. Despite its petite scale, the vase is richly decorated with a colourful hand-painted scene and delicate overglaze enamel detailing.
The front depicts two traditionally dressed women beneath cascading wisteria vines, surrounded by floral accents. The reverse is decorated with a Japanese landscape featuring traditional architecture, distant mountains and Mount Fuji. A deep iron-red shoulder and base complement the pale porcelain body, while touches of blue, green and yellow bring additional depth to the composition.

Historical and Collector Context
Kutani ware is known for its colourful overglaze enamel decoration and richly varied palette. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese workshops produced a wide range of decorative porcelain for both domestic and export markets, including small figural and landscape-decorated vases inspired by Kutani traditions.
As this vase is unmarked, it is best described as Kutani-style rather than attributed to a specific kiln or maker. Its miniature proportions, hand-painted decoration and appealing Mount Fuji landscape make it a charming addition to a collection of Japanese export porcelain, vintage Kutani-style ceramics or miniature decorative vases.
