Vintage Japanese Satsuma-Style Moriage Vase with Buddhist Figures – c.1920s–1940s
Early to mid-20th century
A richly decorated vintage Japanese Satsuma-style vase, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century. The vase features a continuous hand-painted figural scene, likely representing Kannon with Rakans or other Buddhist attendants, enhanced with raised moriage enamel and generous gilt detailing.
The softly crackled ivory-toned glaze provides an elegant background for the colourful decoration. Green, red, blue and gold accents bring depth to the figures and their layered robes, while the raised enamel work gives the surface a tactile and highly decorative quality.
With its substantial proportions and detailed composition, this vase makes an attractive display piece for a collection of Japanese ceramics or an interior with a carefully curated Asian art influence.

Historical and Collector Context
Satsuma-style ceramics became widely admired for their richly detailed decoration, warm ivory-toned surfaces, fine crackled glazes and generous use of gilt. Early to mid-20th-century export pieces often incorporated raised moriage enamel, creating a more dimensional and visually striking effect.
This vase reflects that decorative tradition through its continuous figural composition, textured enamel work and strong use of colour and gold. Although the stylised base mark has not been conclusively identified, the vase remains an appealing example of Japanese Satsuma-style export ceramics from the early to mid-20th century.
