Japanese Satsuma Moriage Vase Signed Kinkōzan, c.1920s–1930s
Kinkōzan · 1930
A finely decorated Japanese Satsuma-style moriage vase, dating to the Taisho to early Showa period, likely circa 1920s–1930s.
The ceramic vase is richly decorated by hand with Buddhist figures, likely representing Kannon and Rakans, set against an ivory-toned crackle glaze. Raised moriage enamel and gilt outlines add texture and definition to the robes, halos and surrounding decorative motifs. Stylised landscape elements and a pine tree continue around the body, allowing the vase to display attractively from multiple angles.
The base bears a red script 金光山 mark, commonly read as Kinkōzan. This form is recorded as an alternative Kinkōzan mark, although its precise relationship to the better-known 錦光山 workshop mark is not conclusively documented.

Historical and Collector Context
Satsuma-style ceramics became highly sought after in overseas markets for their finely crackled glaze, colourful enamel decoration and intricate gilt detailing. Kyoto Satsuma wares are particularly associated with elaborate polychrome scenes and gold decoration over a pale crackled ground.
This vase is a decorative early 20th-century example with a particularly appealing Buddhist figural scene and a clearly visible 金光山 signature. Its substantial 25 cm size, raised enamel work and excellent condition make it an attractive addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics or Satsuma-style export ware.
