Japanese Kaga Kutani Porcelain Creamer with Cranes and Noblemen, c.1900–1925

Early 20th century

$135AUD

A finely decorated Japanese Kaga Kutani porcelain creamer, dating to the early 20th century, likely the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1900–1925. Despite its compact size, the piece is richly hand-painted with two carefully composed scenes and extensive gilt detailing.

One side features a pair of red-crowned cranes before a warm red sun, surrounded by pine branches and a softly rendered landscape. The reverse depicts two figures in traditional dress within an architectural setting, painted with delicate linework and subtle enamel tones. Intricate floral and geometric gilt borders frame the scenes and continue around the rim, handle and shaped body.

The underside bears a red hand-painted 加賀九谷製 mark, read as Kaga Kutani sei, indicating production in the Kaga Kutani tradition. The mark is regional rather than the signature of an identified artist or workshop.

Historical and Collector Context

Kutani porcelain originated in the Kaga region of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture and developed into one of Japan’s recognised decorative ceramic traditions. During the late Meiji and early 20th-century period, Kutani export wares became known for finely painted figural scenes, detailed overglaze enamel work and extensive gold ornament.

This small creamer is particularly appealing for the quality and variety of its decoration. The combination of cranes, pine branches, a warm red sun and a separate figural scene creates a refined presentation that rewards close inspection. Its red Kaga Kutani mark adds further regional and historical interest, while the compact form makes it well suited to cabinet display or inclusion within a collection of Japanese export porcelain.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
