Antique Japanese Kutani Bowl Marked Bizan 美山, Hand-Painted Figural Landscape

Kutani Bizan 美山 · c. 1920s

$195AUD

A finely decorated early 20th-century Japanese Kutani porcelain bowl, bearing a red 九谷美山 mark read as Kutani Bizan and dating to the Taisho to early Showa period, likely circa 1920s.

The small bowl is richly hand-painted with a continuous Japanese landscape scene featuring women and children in traditional robes, blossoming trees, distant mountains and snow-covered houses. Delicate raised enamel flowers and gilt highlights add texture and depth to the composition, while the decorative geometric border around the rim creates an elegant finishing detail.

The pale crackle-glazed porcelain body gives the surface a softly aged character and complements the restrained palette of blues, greens, warm ochre tones and gold. The interior is decorated with small raised floral motifs, continuing the delicate ornamentation beyond the exterior landscape scene.

The base bears a red 九谷美山 mark, read as Kutani Bizan. Bizan marks are documented on Japanese decorative ceramics from the early 20th century, including examples associated with the Taisho period. As more than one artist or workshop used the Bizan name, the mark is best understood as a workshop or name attribution rather than conclusive evidence of personal authorship by a single identified artist.

With its detailed figural landscape, raised enamel decoration and documented Kutani Bizan mark, this bowl would make an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese porcelain, Kutani ware or early 20th-century decorative ceramics.

Historical and Collector Context

Kutani ware is one of Japan’s recognised decorative ceramic traditions and is associated with the southern region of Ishikawa Prefecture. Its distinctive character lies in richly coloured overglaze decoration, detailed painted scenes and the frequent use of gilt highlights.

During the late Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods, Kutani workshops produced a varied range of decorative porcelain for both the domestic and export markets. This small bowl reflects that tradition through its detailed figural landscape, crackle-glazed body and delicate raised enamel ornament.

The red 九谷美山 mark adds historical and collector interest while remaining most appropriately understood as a Kutani Bizan workshop or name attribution.
