Antique Meiji Japanese Satsuma Bucket Vase with Samurai Figures, Dai Nippon Mark, 15 cm

Meiji period, late 19th century

$165AUD

A charming antique Japanese Satsuma bucket-form vase from the Meiji period, decorated with hand-painted samurai and aristocratic figures in richly coloured enamels and gilt detail.

This distinctive miniature vase is designed in the form of a traditional water bucket or pail, with an arched faux bamboo handle and a compact cylindrical body. The surface is finely decorated with figures in traditional Japanese dress, highlighted with raised enamel texture and gold embellishment. The unusual bucket form gives the piece strong display appeal and makes it more distinctive than a standard small Satsuma vase.

The base bears a red character mark, most likely reading Dai Nippon, meaning “Great Japan”. This should be treated as a period-style export mark rather than a confirmed artist or studio signature.

Historical and Collector Context

Satsuma ware became one of Japan’s most recognisable export ceramics during the Meiji period, admired in Europe and America for its finely painted figures, decorative gilt work and richly detailed surfaces. Pieces from this period were often made in small cabinet sizes, intended for display and export to Western collectors.

This example is especially appealing for its unusual bucket form, arched faux bamboo handle and detailed figure decoration. While the base mark should be treated as a period/export mark rather than a confirmed artist signature, the piece remains a decorative and collectible example of Meiji-period Japanese Satsuma ware.

It would suit collectors of Japanese ceramics, Meiji export ware, Satsuma pottery or small cabinet display pieces.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
