Antique Kyoto Satsuma Miniature Vase, Signed Kozan, Wisteria & Gilt Moriage, c.1900

A charming antique Kyoto Satsuma miniature vase, dating to the late Meiji to Taishō period, circa 1900–1920s. The petite ovoid form is decorated with cascading purple wisteria flowers, delicate green foliage, fine gilt outlines and raised gilt moriage detail, all set against a warm ivory crackle-glazed ground.

The base bears a small red seal mark reading 光山, most likely Kozan / Kōzan. This mark is associated with Kyoto Satsuma-style decoration and should be understood as a Kozan signature rather than a full Kinkozan 錦光山 mark. The quality of the floral painting, crackle glaze and gilt detail gives the vase strong cabinet display appeal.

Historical & Collector Context:

Satsuma ware became one of Japan’s most admired export ceramics during the Meiji period, especially through the workshops of Kyoto and Awata. These pieces were highly valued for their fine crackle glaze, intricate hand painting, enamel decoration and lavish use of gilding.

Wisteria is a particularly elegant Japanese motif, associated with spring, refinement and graceful movement. Its cascading form lends itself beautifully to miniature vase decoration, where the trailing blossoms create a sense of rhythm and softness around the body of the piece.
