Antique Japanese Satsuma Vase Signed Naruyama 成山 – Birds and Chrysanthemums, Late Meiji–Taisho Period
Naruyama · later Meiji/ Taisho Period
A beautifully preserved antique Japanese Satsuma vase signed Naruyama 成山, dating to the late Meiji to Taisho period in the early 20th century.
The elegant ovoid body is decorated with a finely painted naturalistic scene of birds among chrysanthemums and flowering plants. Soft pink, red, green and blue enamels are layered over a warm ivory-toned ground with the fine crackled glaze associated with Satsuma ware. Carefully applied gilt highlights bring depth and warmth to the composition without overwhelming the delicate botanical detail.
The decoration is framed by richly patterned borders at the shoulder and foot. Intricate gilt ornament, stylised floral motifs and geometric detailing create a refined transition between the pictorial scene and the gently shaped form of the vase.
The base bears a clearly preserved gilt signature reading Naruyama 成山 within a black rectangular cartouche.
The Naruyama Signature
Naruyama 成山 is a documented Satsuma signature associated with the late Meiji to Taisho period. While detailed biographical information about the artist or workshop remains limited, signed Naruyama wares are recognised within the study of Japanese Satsuma marks and appear in established auction catalogues.
The signature adds an important layer of collector interest to this vase. Its appeal, however, lies equally in the quality of the individual piece: the balanced composition, carefully rendered birds and flowers, restrained use of colour, decorative gilding and excellent state of preservation.

Historical and Collector Context
Satsuma ware became one of Japan’s most admired decorative ceramic traditions during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Created for an expanding international market, these wares were appreciated for their warm ivory-toned surfaces, fine crackled glazes, polychrome enamel painting and carefully applied gold decoration.
Signed examples are particularly appealing because they preserve a connection with the artist or workshop responsible for the decoration. Naruyama 成山 is a recorded Satsuma signature associated with the late Meiji to Taisho period.
This vase is a refined example of that tradition. Its graceful proportions, naturalistic bird-and-flower composition, intricate borders and clearly preserved Naruyama signature give it a strong decorative presence and genuine collector appeal.
Suitable for a collection of Japanese ceramics, signed Satsuma ware or early 20th-century decorative art.
