Antique Japanese Satsuma-Style Vase Signed Chozan 朝山 with Rakan and Dragon

Chozan · circa 1900–1920

$375AUD

A richly decorated antique Japanese Satsuma-style vase, dating to the late Meiji or early Taisho period, circa 1900–1920. The vase features a detailed hand-painted composition of Rakan figures, or Buddhist disciples, gathered around a large serpentine dragon that coils dynamically across the body.

The baluster-shaped form is enhanced with two sculpted elephant-head handles and a flared neck decorated with fine gilt foliate motifs. Raised enamel accents, layered geometric patterns and extensive gold detailing create a dense and visually striking surface typical of decorative Japanese export ceramics of the period.

The underside bears a gilt 朝山 signature on a red cartouche. The name is commonly read as Chozan, although Asayama is also used as an alternative reading.

Historical and Collector Context

Satsuma-style ceramics became highly popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly through finely decorated wares created for international buyers. These pieces often combined softly crackled earthenware surfaces with polychrome enamels, gilding and densely arranged figural scenes.

Rakan figures and dragons were recurring subjects in Japanese decorative ceramics, offering both visual drama and symbolic interest. This vase is particularly appealing for its sculptural elephant-head handles, extensive gilt detailing and signed 朝山 mark. The alternative readings Chozan and Asayama are both encountered in references for Satsuma wares bearing these characters.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
