Antique Japanese Meiji Satsuma Vase Signed Hattori zō 服部造 – Late 19th Century

Hattori Zo · Meiji period, late 19th century

$1,120AUD

A finely executed antique Japanese Satsuma vase from the Meiji period, signed Hattori zō 服部造 to the base and dating to the late 19th century.

The signature is central to the importance of this piece. Hattori zō, meaning “made by Hattori”, is a recognised mark associated with a high-quality group of Meiji-period Satsuma wares. Specialist references distinguish these earlier Hattori zō works from later Hattori sei zō export production made in Yokohama during the early 20th century.

Hattori zō pieces are particularly admired for their intricate figural painting, richly gilded surfaces and refined kinrande-style decoration. The workshop is also recorded as an early adopter of cobalt blue imported from the West, reflecting the technical and artistic experimentation that characterised the finest Meiji-period decorative ceramics.

This 12 cm vase is an excellent example of that tradition. Its compact architectural form is exceptionally detailed, with a raised pedestal foot, broad shoulders, flared rim and two angular handles inspired by classical geometric motifs.

The body is richly hand-painted with finely rendered narrative scenes of samurai, courtly figures and attendants within a riverside landscape. A boat crosses the water beneath flowering trees, while distant architecture, carefully articulated garments and delicate facial details reward close examination.

The figural panels are surrounded by extensive hand-applied gilding, brocade-inspired patterns and intricate geometric borders. Almost every visible surface has been carefully considered, giving the vase the presence of a miniature work of art despite its modest size.

Collector Context

Signed Hattori zō pieces occupy a distinct place within the collecting field for Meiji-period Satsuma ware. Their appeal lies not simply in the presence of a signature, but in the quality of the individual object: finely painted figures, elaborate gilding, densely worked decorative borders and a strong sense of balance across a small ceramic surface.

This vase embodies those qualities beautifully. Its clearly preserved Hattori zō signature, intricate narrative scenes and richly gilded architectural form make it an appealing cabinet piece for a serious collection of Japanese ceramics, Meiji-period decorative art or signed Satsuma ware.
