Historical and Collector Context

Satsuma ware originated in southern Kyushu and later became one of Japan’s most recognisable decorative ceramic traditions. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, elaborately painted Satsuma-style wares were produced for both domestic and international buyers, often combining finely crackled surfaces with polychrome enamel decoration and gilt highlights.

This vase is a decorative early 20th-century example, marked with the generic Satsuma characters 薩摩 rather than the name of an identified workshop. Its appeal lies in the generous 25 cm size, the detailed pagoda landscape and the varied decoration extending around the body. The combination of architectural scenery, pheasant and floral motifs makes it particularly attractive for display in a collection of Japanese ceramics or as an elegant interior accent.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
