Antique Japanese Satsuma Bowl by Bizan – Birds & Chrysanthemums c. Taisho
Bizan · c. 1912–1926
A superb antique Japanese Satsuma-style bowl, hand-painted during the Taisho period (c. 1912–1926) by the Kyoto-based artist Bizan (美山). The interior depicts an exquisite scene of two birds perched among chrysanthemums and wildflowers beneath Mount Fuji, surrounded by flying butterflies. The exterior continues the landscape theme with pine trees and gold-accented foliage. Rich gold moriage detailing and crackle glaze reflect the high quality of early 20th-century Kyoto decorative wares. The scalloped rim is finely gilt with a geometric border.
