Pair of Antique Meiji Kutani Shoza-Style Tea Cups with Cranes

Meiji period

$825AUD

A finely decorated pair of antique Japanese Kutani porcelain cups, likely dating to the Meiji period in the late 19th century.

Despite their petite proportions, the cups are richly painted by hand with an intricate combination of floral motifs, cranes, pine branches, stylised symbols and delicate gilt highlights. The interiors are particularly striking, with colourful botanical compositions framed by deep red and gold decorative panels.

The exterior decoration is more restrained, featuring stylised ginkgo leaves and fine geometric borders. This contrast allows the elaborate interior scenes to reveal themselves gradually, giving the pair a particularly refined and engaging presence.

The bases bear a red 九谷庄七 mark, read as Kutani Shōshichi. Shōshichi is historically documented as the early name of Kutani Shōza, one of the most influential figures in the development of 19th-century Kutani porcelain. The mark adds particular historical and collector interest to the pair. However, it should not be interpreted as conclusive evidence that the cups were personally painted by the master, and the pieces are more appropriately described as Meiji-period Kutani porcelain in the Shoza style.

Their compact size makes them suitable as miniature tea or sake cups, as well as elegant display pieces for a cabinet or curated Japanese porcelain collection.

Historical and Collector Context

Kutani porcelain originated in the Kaga region of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture and developed into one of Japan’s most recognisable decorative ceramic traditions. During the Meiji period, richly decorated Kutani wares became highly sought after in international markets, particularly following their presentation at the Vienna World Exposition of 1873.

Kutani Shōza played an important role in this history. He developed a highly decorative style combining detailed polychrome painting with luxurious gold accents, helping establish the international reputation of Japan Kutani porcelain. His influence can be seen in the layered colours, fine linework and gilt-rich decoration associated with Shoza-style wares.

The cranes and pine branches depicted on these cups are traditional auspicious motifs, associated with longevity, resilience and good fortune. Combined with the floral decoration and historically interesting 九谷庄七 mark, they give the pair both visual appeal and a meaningful connection to the wider Kutani tradition.
