Antique Japanese Imari Arita Porcelain Bowl, Peony and Noshi Ribbon Motif, c.1850–1880

c. 1850-1880

$185AUD

A vibrant antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl from the Arita kilns, dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850–1880.

This beautifully balanced bowl is hand-painted in the classic Imari palette, combining underglaze cobalt blue with iron-red, green enamel and gilt highlights. The interior is decorated with gilt-outlined peonies, scrolling noshi ribbons and a patterned diaper trellis ground, creating a rich and elegant composition. The cavetto is edged in iron-red, while the exterior features underglaze-blue scallop waves, dotted tassel motifs and a narrow stylised lotus band above the raised foot.

The recessed base is finished with an iron-brown glaze, a detail often associated with 19th-century Imari and Arita porcelain. With its generous 18.5 cm diameter, this piece works beautifully as a display bowl, cabinet piece or refined serving bowl.

Historical and Collector Context

Imari ware is one of Japan’s most recognisable porcelain traditions, produced around Arita in Hizen province and historically shipped through the port of Imari. By the Edo period, Arita kilns were producing richly decorated porcelain for both domestic use and export, with the Imari palette becoming especially admired for its combination of cobalt blue, iron-red enamels and gilded detail.

This bowl is a fine decorative example of 19th-century Arita / Imari porcelain. Its peony and noshi ribbon decoration, iron-brown glazed base and balanced form make it appealing to collectors of Japanese ceramics, Edo-period porcelain, Meiji-era decorative arts and antique Imari ware.

All items are vintage or antique and may show light signs of age. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Feel free to message with any questions prior to purchase.
