Antique Japanese Imari Octagonal Dish, Hand-Painted Peonies & Bird, c1900
c.1900-1920s
A beautifully decorated antique Japanese Imari porcelain dish, dating to the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1900–1920s.
The octagonal dish is richly painted by hand in a traditional Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, green and gilt highlights. The central scene features a basket filled with blooming peonies and chrysanthemums, accompanied by a graceful bird in flight and stylised cloud motifs. The broad border is divided into alternating decorative panels with floral, geometric and scrolling designs.

Historical and Collector Context
Imari porcelain is associated with the Arita region of Japan and takes its name from the nearby port of Imari, through which these wares were historically distributed. Decorative Imari porcelain became admired for its vibrant enamel colours, gilt highlights and richly detailed floral and bird designs.
This octagonal dish is an attractive early 20th-century example, combining a traditional Imari-inspired palette with a particularly appealing floral basket and bird composition. Its distinctive shape and balanced decoration make it suitable for display in a collection of Japanese porcelain, antique tableware or Asian decorative arts.
