Vintage Chinese Brass Dragon Vase with Wanli-Style Mark

Early to mid-20th century

$210AUD

A striking vintage Chinese brass vase, likely dating to the early to mid-20th century and designed in an archaistic revival style.

The vase has a sculptural baluster form with richly detailed applied decoration. A sinuous dragon coils around the neck in pursuit of a flaming pearl, while additional fish, floral scrolls and stylised cloud motifs continue across the body. The combination of engraved surface detail and raised relief work gives the piece a bold decorative presence.

The underside bears a raised apocryphal Wanli-style mark. This revival mark forms part of the decorative design and should not be interpreted as evidence of Ming dynasty production.

Historical and Collector Context

Later Chinese decorative metalware frequently drew inspiration from earlier dynastic forms and motifs. Dragons pursuing a flaming pearl are an enduring feature of Chinese decorative arts, while archaistic marks were sometimes incorporated into later revival pieces as part of their visual language.

This brass vase is best appreciated as an ornamental early to mid-20th-century revival piece rather than as an object from the Ming dynasty. Its sculptural relief work, warm patina and richly layered decoration make it an appealing addition to a collection of Asian metalware or vintage decorative objects.
