Circa 1880-1910

$195AUD

An impressive antique Continental European decorative ewer, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1880–1910.

Crafted in silvered brass, the tall pedestal-form vessel is richly decorated with detailed cast relief work. The central scene features a striking mermaid or siren surrounded by sea creatures and flowing aquatic motifs. Additional floral scrolls, stylised masks and ornamental details continue around the body, neck and pedestal base.

The elongated spout and elegant curved handle give the piece a particularly sculptural appearance. Its elaborate Historicist design draws on earlier European decorative traditions, with strong Baroque Revival influences.

Historical and Collector Context

Marine imagery has a long tradition in European decorative metalware, particularly in the design of ornamental ewers. Mermaids, sirens and sea creatures were frequently incorporated into vessels inspired by earlier Renaissance and Baroque forms.

This richly decorated example reflects the renewed interest in historic European styles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its sculptural form, detailed relief work and unusual mermaid motif make it an appealing addition to a collection of antique metalware, maritime décor or Continental European decorative arts.
