Antique Silver-Plated Cut Crystal Claret Jug, c.1900, Rococo Style
Continental Europe · c. 1900–1930
An elegant antique cut crystal claret jug with richly decorated silver-plated mounts, likely dating to the early 20th century.
The clear crystal body is finely cut with layered diamond, fan and starburst motifs that catch and refract the light beautifully. Above the glass body, the ornate silver-plated mount is shaped with flowing scrolls, floral relief decoration and an elegant hinged lid. The sculptural handle curves gracefully around the side of the jug, giving the piece a particularly refined Rococo Revival character.
Standing 27 cm high, the jug has an impressive yet balanced presence. It would make a beautiful addition to a vintage barware collection, a formal dining setting or a carefully styled interior.

Historical and Collector Context
Claret jugs became an elegant feature of the 19th-century dining table. Traditionally used for serving claret, the British name for red Bordeaux wine, these vessels combined practical function with decorative craftsmanship. Their clear glass or crystal bodies allowed the colour of the wine to be appreciated, while fitted metal mounts, hinged lids and sculptural handles added a sense of occasion to the table.
Silver-mounted and silver-plated claret jugs became especially popular from the Victorian period onwards. This example reflects the lasting influence of Rococo design, with its flowing C- and S-shaped curves, floral ornament and graceful asymmetry.
The deeply cut crystal body and richly detailed silver-plated mount give this jug a strong decorative presence. It is an appealing piece for collectors of antique glass, vintage barware or elegant tableware with a sense of history.
