Antique Burmese Silver Canister with Repoussé Figural Scenes, Myanmar

Burma, now Myanmar · late 19th to early 20th century

$495AUD

A finely decorated antique Burmese silver canister, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The cylindrical box is worked in detailed repoussé and chased decoration, with oval panels depicting expressive figures and animals surrounded by floral motifs. The removable lid is also decorated in relief, giving the piece an attractive finish from every angle.

The narrative scenes appear to be inspired by traditional Burmese storytelling and may relate to Jataka tales, which depict episodes from the previous lives of the Buddha. The canister is unmarked, as is common with many pieces of Burmese silver, and the precise silver purity has not been confirmed.

Collector Context

Burmese silver is recognised for its detailed repoussé work and narrative decoration. Cylindrical canisters and boxes were often ornamented with scenes drawn from Buddhist tradition, mythology and daily life. This smaller example has an appealing compact form and finely detailed relief work, making it suitable for collectors of antique Burmese silver and Southeast Asian decorative arts.
