Historical and Collector Context

Tazzas and footed dishes were popular forms in British silver during the late Victorian, Edwardian and George V periods. They were used on formal dining tables for fruit, sweetmeats, cakes and other small delicacies, while also serving as decorative centrepieces.

E.S. Barnsley & Co, the firm of Edward Souter Barnsley, was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and produced a range of domestic silver wares. This tazza was assayed in Sheffield in 1912, during the reign of George V, and reflects the restrained elegance of early 20th-century British table silver.

With its solid sterling silver construction, substantial 227.7 gram weight, clean lobed form and unmonogrammed surface, this piece would suit collectors of George V silver, Sheffield hallmarked silver, E.S. Barnsley silver, antique footed dishes or refined table centrepieces.
