Historical and Collector Context
James Dixon & Sons Ltd was one of Sheffield’s well-known silver and metalware manufacturers, producing a wide range of domestic, table and presentation pieces during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm’s Sheffield silver hollowware remains popular with collectors for its practical forms and decorative quality.
This milk jug reflects late Victorian taste for shaped silver tableware with ornamental scrollwork and gilt interiors. Gilding was often used inside silver jugs, bowls and other table pieces to provide a warmer appearance and a more luxurious finish.
With its Sheffield 1900 hallmark, James Dixon & Sons maker’s mark, gilt-washed interior and refined fluted body, this jug would suit collectors of Victorian sterling silver, Sheffield silver, antique tea service pieces, small silver jugs or decorative English table silver.
