Vintage Australian Sterling Silver Cruet Set with Cobalt Blue Glass Liners and Two Strachan Spoons
20th century
A decorative vintage Australian sterling silver cruet set, comprising a lidded mustard pot, an open salt cellar, a pepper shaker and two associated Strachan sterling silver condiment spoons.
The three vessels are designed with softly rounded bodies, scalloped rims and decorative shell-form feet. The mustard pot is fitted with a hinged lid and an elegant scrolling handle, while the pepper shaker has a gently tapered body and pierced removable top. Two removable cobalt blue glass liners provide a rich contrast against the polished silver surfaces.
The cruet vessels are marked STG SIL with a crown device, a style of sterling silver marking associated with Australian silverware. The two accompanying condiment spoons are separately marked STRACHAN’S and STG. SIL.

Historical and Collector Context
Australian sterling silver is often identified by abbreviated marks such as STG SIL or STG SILVER rather than the British assay office system. These marks give Australian silverware a distinctive collecting interest and reflect the country’s own silversmithing and retail traditions.
Cruet sets were designed for serving condiments at the dining table, typically including a salt cellar, a mustard pot and a pepper shaker. Removable glass liners served both a decorative and practical purpose, protecting the silver interiors from direct contact with salt and mustard.
The complete composition, cobalt blue glass liners, decorative shell-form feet and associated Strachan spoons give this set an appealing presence for a collection of Australian silver or vintage tableware.
