Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Visiting Card Case by Henry Hyde Aston, Birmingham 1863
Henry Hyde Aston · 1863
A beautifully detailed antique Victorian visiting card case crafted in sterling silver by Henry Hyde Aston and fully hallmarked in Birmingham in 1863.
The shaped rectangular case is richly hand-engraved across both sides with dense foliate scrollwork, ornamental framing and elegant scalloped edges. The front is centred with a shield-shaped cartouche bearing an original script monogram, while the reverse features a distinctive geometric lozenge-pattern panel framed by further scrolling foliage.
The extensive engraving rewards close examination. Fine hatched backgrounds create contrast and depth, allowing the polished foliate elements and architectural lines to stand out across the silver surface. Although created as a practical personal accessory, the case has the decorative presence of a small Victorian work of art.
The Henry Hyde Aston Connection
The case bears the H·A maker’s mark of Henry Hyde Aston, together with Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks for 1863.
Henry Hyde Aston registered his mark at the Birmingham Assay Office in 1862 and succeeded the family firm Aston & Son at Regent Place, Birmingham. His documented output includes finely made personal and domestic silver objects such as card cases, cigar cases, cups, salts and mustard pots, alongside gold jewellery.
This card case was hallmarked only a year after Aston registered his personal mark, placing it firmly within the early period of his documented Birmingham production. Its intricate hand engraving, distinctive shaped outline and clearly preserved hallmarks give it genuine appeal for a collector of Victorian silver.

Historical and Collector Context
Visiting card cases were elegant personal accessories during the Victorian period, designed to hold calling cards used in formal social visits and introductions. Their compact surfaces gave silversmiths an opportunity to create highly decorative objects through detailed engraving, shaped outlines and personalised monograms.
This 1863 example is particularly appealing for its early date, Birmingham hallmarks, documented Henry Hyde Aston maker’s mark and richly worked decoration across both sides. The original monogram preserves a tangible connection with its first owner, while the signs of use reflect the long history of an object carried and valued for more than 160 years.
Suitable for a collection of Victorian silver, antique personal accessories or finely engraved English metalwork.
