Historical and Collector Context

Silver sugar casters became an elegant feature of the formal dining table, designed to allow finely ground sugar to be sprinkled over fruit, desserts and other dishes. Their pierced covers combined practical purpose with decorative craftsmanship, making them both useful serving pieces and attractive objects in their own right.

Sanders & Mackenzie was a Birmingham silversmith partnership associated with Ernest Wilfred Sanders and Henry Arthur Mackenzie. The firm’s mark was registered in 1911, and its workshop was located in Spencer Street, Birmingham. Its production included silver tableware and decorative domestic objects such as condiments, cruet sets and sugar castors.

This 1946 example retains the restrained elegance of traditional English silverware while reflecting the continued craftsmanship of Birmingham silversmithing during the post-war period. Its solid sterling silver construction, clearly preserved hallmarks and classic pedestal form make it an appealing piece for collectors and for practical use in an elegant table setting.
