Historical and Collector Context

John le Gallais worked in Broad Street, St Helier, Jersey, as a goldsmith, jeweller, watchmaker and clockmaker. He was first recorded in partnership with Thomas de Gruchy in 1831 and continued the business independently after de Gruchy’s death in 1846 until its sale in 1874.

During the nineteenth century, Jersey goldsmiths frequently sold or overmarked English-made silverware, sometimes adding local bright-cut decoration. The John le Gallais mark is known on London-made spoons and other small tableware pieces, making this London 1865 example an appealing survivor of the Channel Islands silver trade.
