Historical and Collector Context

Edwin James Drew Bodley operated at Hill Pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, during the late Victorian period. The factory produced quality porcelain between approximately 1875 and 1892, including decorative wares reflecting the fashionable interest in Japanese-inspired design during the Aesthetic Movement.

This circa 1876 oval dish is an attractive small example of Bodley’s decorative porcelain, combining a practical form with an elegant Imari-inspired palette and refined gilt detailing. Its compact size makes it particularly appealing for cabinet display or as a decorative accent within a collection of Victorian English ceramics.
