Antique Chinese Carved Soapstone Double Brush Washer with Floral and Bird Decoration

19th or early 20th century

$155AUD

A finely carved antique Chinese double brush washer or scholar’s desk vessel, hand-crafted from naturally mottled soapstone. The composition features two adjoining oval vessels raised above an intricately pierced rocky base, with a delicate openwork arrangement of leaves and hanging blossoms between them.

A small bird is perched above the floral decoration, adding a charming naturalistic detail to the sculptural design. The stone displays attractive cream, ochre and soft pink tonal variations, giving the piece a warm and individual character.

Measuring approximately 17.5 cm across, this decorative soapstone vessel has a strong visual presence while remaining compact enough for a cabinet, desk or shelf display. It would make an appealing addition to a curated collection of Chinese scholar’s objects, carved stone pieces or antique Asian decorative arts.

Historical and Collector Context

Brush washers and related desk vessels formed part of the traditional scholar’s table, where they were associated with calligraphy and painting. Decorative examples were often carved with naturalistic motifs, combining practical use with sculptural craftsmanship.

Soapstone was particularly suited to intricate carving because its relatively soft, close-grained structure allowed artisans to create fine relief and pierced openwork details. This example is especially appealing for its paired-vessel form, floral composition, small bird motif and warm natural colouring.
