Antique Chinese Zhangzhou Swatow Blue and White Porcelain Dish – Late Ming to Early Qing, 26cm

circa 17th century

$365AUD

A characterful antique Chinese blue and white porcelain dish, attributed to the Zhangzhou kilns and traditionally known as Swatow ware. Likely dating to the late Ming to early Qing period, circa 17th century, the dish displays the expressive brushwork and distinctive provincial character associated with Chinese export ceramics of this type.

The interior is decorated in soft underglaze blue with a central medallion and loosely rendered motifs arranged around the cavetto. The softly aged glaze, visible kiln irregularities and sandy-textured underside contribute to the dish’s authentic historical presence.

Historical and Collector Context

Zhangzhou ware, traditionally referred to as Swatow ware, was produced primarily for export during the late Ming and early Qing periods. These ceramics were widely traded across Southeast Asia and other international markets.

Unlike the more refined porcelain made at Jingdezhen, Zhangzhou wares are valued for their spontaneous decoration, thickly potted forms, visible firing irregularities and distinctive sandy bases. These characteristics give each piece an individual presence and reflect the practical methods used in regional kiln production.

This dish would make an appealing addition to a collection of Chinese export ceramics, Ming–Qing provincial porcelain or antique Asian decorative art. Its aged surface and expressive decoration also make it an attractive display piece for an interior with a collected, historical character.
