Antique Chester Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker, 1919

Chester · 1919

$295AUD

An antique sterling silver pepper shaker hallmarked in Chester in 1919. The piece has an attractive bulbous form raised on three shaped feet, with a gently scalloped rim and a removable pierced domed lid finished with a small finial. Its compact proportions and distinctive footed design give it a pleasing early 20th-century character.

The hallmarks include the lion passant for sterling silver, the Chester assay mark and the date letter “T” for 1919. A maker’s mark is present but worn and cannot be identified with confidence.

COLLECTOR CONTEXT

Chester silver is particularly appealing to collectors because the assay office closed in 1962 and its hallmarks are encountered less frequently than those of London, Birmingham or Sheffield. This 1919 sterling silver pepper shaker is an attractive example of practical English table silver with a distinctive decorative form.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. We are happy to provide further details or images on request.
