Antique Australian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring by W.J. Sanders, Monogrammed
W.J. Sanders · Early to mid-20th century
Early 20th-Century Australian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring by W.J. Sanders – GMR Monogram
A characterful early 20th-century Australian sterling silver napkin ring made by W.J. Sanders & Co., the long-established Sydney silversmithing firm founded in 1911.
The substantial circular form is finished with elegant scalloped borders along the upper and lower edges, framing a smooth central band engraved with the script monogram “GMR”. The softly aged silver surface and original personal engraving preserve the period character of the piece, while the decorative edges give it a more distinctive presence than a plain napkin ring.
The partially worn marks remain consistent with W.J. Sanders production and include the 925 and STG sterling silver marks, together with the firm’s characteristic elephant emblem.

Historical and Collector Context
W.J. Sanders was founded in Sydney in 1911 by William James Sanders, a Birmingham-trained silversmith. The firm became an important part of Australia’s silversmithing tradition, producing domestic silverware, presentation pieces and ceremonial objects.
W.J. Sanders continues to operate today and is trusted with the creation and restoration of significant Australian trophies and commemorative objects, including the Melbourne Cup and the Australian Open suite of trophies.
This napkin ring is a small but appealing example of the company’s table silver. Its Australian origin, recognisable maker, sterling silver construction, decorative scalloped borders and original monogram give it both practical charm and a tangible connection with the history of Australian craftsmanship.
Suitable for a collection of Australian silver, a thoughtfully curated table setting or a gift for someone with the initials GMR.
