Historical and Collector Context
Sterling silver cigarette cases were popular personal accessories in the late Victorian, Edwardian and early George V periods. They were often carried by gentlemen and were frequently engraved with initials or monograms, making them both practical objects and personal presentation pieces.
W Smith Birmingham Ltd was registered in Birmingham in 1919, with marks recorded on cigarette cases and other small silver wares. This example, hallmarked in the same year, reflects the clean and practical style of early 20th-century British silver accessories.
Today, antique silver cigarette cases are collected not only as smoking accessories but also as card cases, display pieces and examples of personal silver. This piece is especially appealing for its substantial weight, clear Birmingham 1919 hallmark, period monogram and classic curved form.
